Ouimet Farms in Vankleek Hill is honouring Terry Fox with a corn maze to celebrate the 45th anniversary of his Marathon of Hope. “He is a true Canadian icon and we thought we would pay a tribute to what he’s done and his legacy,” says Andre Ouimet, owner of Ouimet Farms Adventure in eastern Ontario. Ouimet says the thought came about this past winter and has been planning for it since December. “We come up with the idea, then we have to put it on paper, digitize it and then we go into the field and draw it out and then corn comes up and it looks amazing,” says Ouimet. The maze is a scavenger hunt filled with Terry Fox trivia and puzzle pieces. The farm has a Terry Fox exhibit in its museum that also has fun facts, history and a map of Fox’s journey. Noella St. Pierre and her family come from Halifax every year to visit her cousins in Ottawa to do the annual corn maze. “We’ve been doing this for three years now. We come at around the same time,” said Guy St. Pierre, doing maze with family of eight. The family says they split up into two groups to make it a competition to see who gets through first, but say it’s mostly about having fun. The farm has been creating pictures out of crops for the past 13 years to honour the Queen, Canada, farmers, astronauts, Disney and others. “But this is pretty special to us - Terry Fox, can’t say more about it,” says Ouimet. The maze is all fun but is also in support of a good cause. “We have been in contact with the Terry Fox Foundation. They’re very supportive of it. We are going to be making a donation at the end of the season. Every entry a portion of our proceeds will be given to Terry Fox Foundation,” says Ouimet. The farm is filled with fun for the whole family with many attractions. The corn maze is open every weekend until the end of October.
