A child was struck by a vehicle near an elementary school in Barrhaven on Thursday, paramedics say. According to Ottawa paramedics, the incident occurred at the intersection of Main Halyard Lane and Flagstaff Drive near St. Juan Diego School around 3:40 p.m. A child, approximately five years old, had been struck by a vehicle, and paramedics say they were transported to CHEO in stable but serious condition. “My heart goes out to the family, friends and witnesses of this tragic event,” Coun. David Hill wrote in a post on Facebook. “I have not had the opportunity to speak to the family yet and as such I cannot confirm the condition of the child, but I am committed to ensuring that the safety concerns along this stretch of the road are addressed to avoid any other family having to suffer through this.” Hill said traffic calming measures were approved for Flagstaff Drive last year but had not been installed yet, as installations are usually done after the spring thaw. “I’ve asked staff to fast track street-sweeping Flagstaff and installing these traffic calming features, and will keep you updated on the progress of this specific application,” Hill said. Hill says he is also looking to accelerate the installation of a three way stop in the area, and he is trying to get a traffic guard hired at the corner of Main Halyard. Ottawa police say no charges have been laid at this time.
