Child riding bike dies after being struck by school bus in Almonte, Ont.

Residents in Almonte, Ont. are mourning the death of a nine-year-old boy who died after being struck by a school bus Wednesday afternoon.

Ontario Provincial Police Const. Corey Noonan said the boy was riding his bike on Paterson Street when he was struck at about 3:40 p.m. shortly after school was dismissed.

Mississippi Mills Mayor Christa Lowry identified the victim as Archer Lowe, a student at R. Tait McKenzie Public School.

“Archer was an important member of our community. He was a vibrant kid with a big smile who loved animals, especially his dog ‘Moose,’” Lowry said in a statement.

“He loved riding his bike and was a terrific soccer player – the best and fastest defence in his league."

The sign at R. Tait McKenzie School said, “RTM loves Archer. We will remember you always.” Flags at all municipal buildings in Almonte have been lowered to half-mast in memory of Archer.

“Together, our community would normally be sharing in the happiness and celebration that marks the end of the school year. Instead, this is a sombre and solemn time,” Lowry said.

“Our community shares in the deep pain brought by this tragedy. Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of young Archer and stand in support of all those who are grieving and to those affected by this accident.”

A memorial on Paterson Street included flowers, stuffed animals and candles, along with a giant sign saying, “We love you, Archer.”

The incident happened in front of Holy Name of Mary Catholic School just down the road with students and staff outside, witnesses told CTV News.

“Staff that were witnesses performed heroic lifesavings measures. He was transported to Almonte General Hospital where he was pronounced dead,” Noonan said.

Upper Canada District School Board Superintendent Casey Nelson says there will be mental health support for students and staff at R. Tait McKenzie Thursday, the last day of school before summer break.

“School staff are shaken and grieving after the tragic incident in our community this evening. Everyone is sending their deepest sympathies to the family and their friends during this very difficult time,” Nelson said in an emailed statement.

“We have had mental health support staff at the school this afternoon, and they will be at the school tomorrow to help staff and students should they need to speak to someone about this sad loss.”

The road was closed for several hours for an investigation and has since reopened.

“On behalf of the OPP, we would like to say our condolences to this boy’s family and friends and the many students and staff of the many schools that are affected by this today,” Noonan said.

A GoFundMe page has been set up in memory of Archer. According to the fundraiser, the money will fund funeral arrangements, a celebration of life and provide relief for the family to take time to grieve.

Ontario Provincial Police continue to investigate the crash. Almonte is located 50 kilometres southwest of Ottawa.
