The Alexandra Bridge will be closed to motorists over the next three weeks for maintenance work. Public Services and Procurement Canada says the interprovincial bridge between Ottawa and Gatineau will be closed during the following periods: The boardwalk will remain open for pedestrians and cyclists. “The Alexandra Bridge is at the end of its service life; therefore, regular interventions are necessary to ensure its continued safety,” Public Services and Procurement Canada said in a statement. “The planned maintenance work includes welding repairs on the steel grating of the Gatineau-bound lane. These repairs are essential to maintain the structural integrity of the bridge until it is replaced.” The Alexandra Bridge first opened in 1900. The National Capital Commission and Public Services and Procurement Canada are planning to replace the aging Alexandra Bridge. Construction is planned to begin in 2028 and is expected to last until 2032.
