Two of Ottawa’s newest photo radar cameras caught more than 1,000 drivers speeding in their first month of operation, as the city continues to expand the automated speed enforcement camera program. Fifty-seven photo radar cameras were in operation at the end of December, including eight new cameras activated in December and nine in November. Statistics released by the city show the new camera on Merivale Road, between MacFarlane Road and Brookdale Avenue, issued 1,877 tickets in its first month of operation in December. The new camera on Stittsville Main Street, between Hobin Street and Beverly Street, issued 1,343 tickets in December. The report does not say when the cameras were activated: The camera on Walkley Road, between Colliston Court North/Albion Road and Colliston Court South, has caught 2,561 speeders in its first two months of operation. A total of 1,136 speeding tickets were issued in November and 1,425 tickets issued in December through the automated speed enforcement camera program. Ottawa’s photo radar cameras caught a record number of speeders in 2024. Statistics show 383,830 speeding tickets were issued through the automated speed enforcement program in 2024. There were 220,789 speeding tickets in 2023 (26 cameras), 127,939 tickets in 2022 (17 cameras) and 80,944 tickets in 2021 (eight cameras) through the photo radar camera program. The city planned to have 60 photo radar cameras in operation by the end of 2024, with plans to install 24 new cameras this year.
