41 Ottawa police officers caught running red lights this spring, report shows

Dozens of Ottawa police officers were caught running red lights at Ottawa intersections during the spring.

A report for the Ottawa Police Service’s Board shows there were 41 internal complaints against officers for red light camera infractions in the April to June period, up from 18 red light camera tickets during the same period in 2025.

An internal complaint is launched when a photo radar camera or red-light camera infraction is issued to an Ottawa Police Service vehicle.

The officer is responsible for paying the fine if warranted, according to the police service.

There were 18 internal complaints about red light camera infractions involving police officers during the first three months of the year, down from 23 complaints during the January-March period in 2025.

In 2025, there were 116 internal complaints related to officers caught running red lights by the red light cameras.

Ottawa currently has 86 red light cameras located at intersections across the city.

The report shows there were 27 internal complaints related to officers involved in motor vehicle collisions in the April to June period, down from 28 collisions in the spring of 2025.

The report shows there were 183 new public and internal complaints about officers in the April to June period, down from 244 during the second quarter of 2025. The drop in complaints is mainly due to no internal complaints linked to automated speed enforcement cameras after Ontario ordered photo radar cameras turned off last fall.

The Ottawa Police Service’s Professional Standards Unit receives, investigates and resolves complaints involving officers and civilian members of the force. Internal complaints are an initiative by the chief and involve allegations of misconduct, policy non-compliance or other matters requiring review, including red light camera offences and at-fault motor vehicle collisions.
