Ottawa police say nearly 30 commercial vehicles were found to be unsafe to operate on the roads following a safety blitz on Monday. According to a news release from Ottawa police, officers conducted the safety blitz in the city’s west end and collaborated with Ontario Provincial Police and the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario to inspect 67 trucks. Of the 67 trucks that were inspected, 27 vehicles were taken off the road. Police say they found deficiencies with brakes, steering components, lamps, tires, wheels, hubs, load security, driver logs and driver licensing. Police also laid 38 charges, with offences relating to annual and daily inspections, expired or missing certificates, vehicle emissions, load security, vehicle weight, improper tires and brakes, permit issues, plate issues and Tow and Storage Safety and Enforcement Act violations. “Vehicles that are not properly maintained, overloaded, or operated by unlicensed or suspended drivers pose a serious risk to everyone on the road,” police said in a statement. Police say two drivers were found with suspended licences. Police say they also removed the licence plates from one vehicle and suspended two drivers.
