Nearly half of all hit-and-run collisions in Ottawa in 2024 occurred in parking lots, according to newly released data. The Ottawa Police Service released its 2024 collision report on Friday, showing there were 19,777 collisions in Ottawa in 2024. There were 4,032 collisions classified as “fail to remain” in Ottawa last year. Police say 2,008 of the 4,032 “fail to remain” collisions occurred in Ottawa parking lots, compared to 768 at a “non intersection,” 588 classified as “intersection related” and 256 hit and runs at an intersection. The report shows 312 hit-and-run collisions were reported to have occurred “at/near” a private driveway. The most common times for a fail to remain collision were 4 p.m. (326 collisions), 5 p.m. (316 collisions) and 12 p.m. (309 collisions), while the days with the most hit-and-run collisions were Thursday (645 collisions) and Friday (626 collisions). January was the month with the most failing to remain collisions, with 431 collisions. Collisions involving pedestrians Ottawa police received 218 reports of collisions involving pedestrians on Ottawa roads last year. Five people were killed in collisions in 2024. Statistics show 57 collisions involving pedestrians were “intersection related,” 56 collisions involving pedestrians at four-way stops and 33 collisions in parking lots. Police say there were 29 collisions involving pedestrians at intersections. Police say 79 collisions involving pedestrians were due to a driver failing to yield the right of way, 15 collisions were due to an improper turn by the driver and 12 were due to the driver disobeying a traffic signal.
