Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) say two people had to be rescued from an apartment following a kitchen fire Thursday afternoon. Firefighters were called to a three-storey walk-up building on Shillington Avenue, near the Central Experimental Farm, at around 4:36 p.m. Flames and smoke were visible from an apartment on the second floor. Firefighters found three people on a third-floor balcony who were rescued with the help of a ladder truck. Another person was found in a stairwell and rescued from the building, Ottawa Fire Services said in an update Friday. OFS spokesperson Nick DeFazio said one of the rescued residents collapsed on the ground after getting outside. A spokesperson for the Ottawa Paramedic Service said Thursday night that two adults were assessed at the scene but did not go to the hospital. The fire was declared under control at 4:56 p.m. Firefighters used fans to ventilate the building before letting tenants back inside. Victim services were dispatched to the scene to help the victims of the fire. OFS says the fire did not spread beyond the unit, but did affect both the kitchen and the living room area. A fire truck remained on a fire watch to monitor for flare-ups. The building where this fire happened is on the same street as a fire last week during which residents heard an explosion.
