A truck driver was treated for serious injuries after the vehicle carrying a load of hot asphalt left the road and rolled into the median on Highway 416 in Ottawa. Emergency crews responded to a call for a tractor-trailer in the ditch along the southbound lanes of Highway 416 near West Hunt Club Road at 3 a.m. Friday. “Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed a tractor-trailer carrying a full load of hot asphalt was flipped onto its side with the driver’s side landing on the centre median,” Ottawa Fire Services spokesperson Nick Defazio said, adding the driver was trapped inside. Firefighters had to stabilize the vehicle before using specialized tools to safely extricate the trapped occupant from the truck. “Firefighters quickly stabilized the vehicle and advanced a hose line as a precaution. Firefighters used specialized tools to safely remove the driver from the vehicle at 4:54,” Defazo said. The load of asphalt spilled onto the grass. An Ottawa Paramedic Service spokesperson said a man was treated at the scene for serious but non-life-threatening injuries and he was transported to hospital. Firefighters spread absorbent on the leaking fluids to prevent it from spreading.
