Ontario Provincial Police say an 81-year-old driver from Sault Ste. Marie died after a two-vehicle crash on Highway 17 during the noon hour in Batchawana Bay. OPP said officers are investigating the fatal collision involving a tractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle that occurred north of the city. “OPP responded to a serious two-vehicle collision on Highway 17, near Pancake Bay Provincial Park,” police said. “One of the vehicle drivers, an 81-year-old from Sault Ste. Marie, was pronounced deceased at the scene.” The highway was closed between Mills Drive in Wawa and Highway 563 for several hours to allow investigators to examine the crash site. Highway 17 fully reopened at about 10:15 p.m., OPP said on social media. Provincial police have not released any details on the cause of the crash, if there were any other injuries or if any charges are being considered.
