Toxic drug supply prompts alert in Timmins area

Public health officials in the Timmins area have issued a red alert, warning the local drug supply is contaminated after a recent spike in overdoses.

A red-level drug alert has been issued for the area formerly served by the Porcupine Health Unit due to the presence of toxic substances in the local unregulated drug supply being linked to recent overdoses in the region.

Northeastern Public Health and the Opioid Emergency Response Task Force issued the heightened alert on Tuesday, citing concerns that local illicit drugs may contain toxic substances that are poisoning users.

“This heightened alert calls for increased awareness of the ongoing severity of the opioid crisis,” said Krista Green, the program manager with the health authority, in a news release.

“Any type of illicit drug – regardless of how it is used – may contain toxic substances that can result in unintentional opioid poisoning.”

The health agencies urge individuals to carry naloxone, a medication that can temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.

Naloxone kits are available free of charge at most pharmacies and all Northeastern Public Health offices.

Key recommendations from officials include never using drugs alone, carrying naloxone and calling 911 or local emergency services in the event of a suspected poisoning.

The health unit and the task force say they will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
