Snow squall warnings, watches and special weather statements have been issued for the southwest region of northern Ontario – including Sault Ste. Marie. According to Environment Canada, a snow squall warning is in effect for the Sault Ste. Marie and St. Joseph Island area for Sunday morning. While the total snowfall accumulations are only estimated to be 5 centimetres there will be reduced visibility at times in heavy snow and blowing snow. At the same time, the national weather agency also issued special weather statements for many areas along Manitoulin Island, Thessalon, Espanola and surrounding areas for high winds. “Strong southwesterly winds developing tonight … through Monday,” reads the statement. Strong southwesterly winds are predicted to gust up to 70 or 80 km/h. “High winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break,” the statement continued. “Power outages are also possible.” Environment Canada expects the snow squalls and high winds to persist throughout the day before weakening Monday. “Flurries, at time heavy, are forecast to weaken and shift north of the area,” said Environment Canada. Drivers are urged that travel could be hazardous in some locations due to reduced visibility. “Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions,” said the warning.
