A 32-year-old man from Papineau-Cameron Township near North Bay has been charged with impaired driving following an incident last week at a truck rodeo. Around 10:10 p.m. on Aug. 2, Ontario Provincial Police were patrolling the event, located on Neault Road in Papineau-Cameron Township. “Officers observed a vehicle stopped in a roadway within the event grounds and located the driver asleep in the driver’s seat,” police said in a news release Aug. 5 “During the investigation, officers observed signs consistent with alcohol impairment.” Refused to give breath sample He was arrested and taken to the Mattawa OPP detachment for further testing. “While at the detachment, the accused refused to comply with a lawful breath demand,” police said. He was charged with impaired driving and refusing to comply with a demand. The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay on Sept. 8. In addition, his driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle was impounded for seven days. “Refusing to provide a breath sample when lawfully required by police carries the same serious criminal consequences as impaired driving,” police said. “The OPP will continue conducting proactive enforcement initiatives to identify and remove impaired drivers from our roadways.”
