A 29-year-old man is facing more than a dozen charges, including assault with a weapon and robbery, following a series of incidents in Sault Ste. Marie. According to local police, the charges arise from three separate encounters involving police and the public between Aug. 31 and Sept. 7. Warrant issued after fake ID provided Police said the initial interaction occurred when officers patrolling the 100 block of East Street on Aug. 31 observed an individual on private property and instructed them to identify themselves. “The individual identified themself with a name that a later investigation determined not to be theirs,” the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service said in a news release Tuesday. A warrant was subsequently obtained for the person’s arrest. Thefts reported on Bay Street Then on Sept. 6, 911 operators received a report of mischief to, and theft from, a vehicle in the 100 block of Bay Street. “An investigation revealed the accused broke the window of a vehicle and stole items from inside,” said police. Around 7:45 a.m. the following day, 911 operators received another report of theft in the same block and officers were dispatched to the scene. “An investigation revealed a victim saw the accused stealing their belongings from their vehicle and, when the victim confronted them, the accused attempted to strike them with a hammer and verbally threatened them,” police said. According to investigators, the victim and accused were not known to each other. Weapons seized Police said officers with the Division 2 Unit located the accused about two hours after the second theft was reported and took them into custody. “Upon searching the accused, officers located some of the victim’s belongings, as well as a concealed hammer, knife and screwdriver,” police said. As a result of the investigation, the man is charged with assault with a weapon, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, obstructing a peace officer, and impersonation with intent to avoid arrest and prosecution, or to obstruct justice. He also faces charges of robbery, theft, possession of break-in instruments, mischief, and eight counts of failing to comply with a probation order. The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing. None of the allegations have been tested in court.
