Rain warnings for some areas of the northeast, snow for others

CTV News weather specialist Rick Wyman has the details of the weather forecast for the next seven days across northeastern Ontario.

Heavy rain is expected Thursday and Friday in Greater Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie, with a mix of snow and rain forecast in Timmins and North Bay.

In the Sault and Sudbury, total rainfall amounts of between 20-40 mm are expected Thursday evening into Friday.

“A low-pressure system is expected to bring rain to the area beginning tonight,” the warning said.

“The frozen ground has reduced the ability to absorb this rainfall ... Water will likely pool on roads and in low-lying areas.”

“Don’t drive through flooded roadways,” Environment Canada said.

Wintry mix

“Avoid low-lying areas. Watch for washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.”

In North Bay and Timmins, the same low-pressure system is expected to bring a wintry mix of precipitation to the area beginning Friday evening.

“Rain is expected to begin tonight and transition to snow Friday afternoon,” the special statement said.

“On Friday, temperatures will fall to below the freezing mark, any water on roadways and walkways will freeze, creating icy and slippery conditions.”

It’s uncertain how much snow and rain will fall in the area.

“Total rainfall amounts of 10 to 20 mm,” Environment Canada said.

“Total snowfall amounts of 5 to 15 cm. Reduced visibility in heavy snow.”
