In the latest of Ontario highway announcements over the past few weeks, the province is replacing the Hearst truck inspection station and adding 14 kilometres of new passing lanes on Highway 11. The passing lanes 11 will be located near Benoit Township, Calder Township, Gill Township, Grenfill Township and Kendrey Township, the province said in a news release Thursday. “The new inspection station will be a game changer for strengthening commercial vehicle enforcement, while new passing lanes will improve traffic flow and support the safe and efficient movement of people and goods across northern Ontario,” said Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation. “This vital corridor supports the movement of people and goods across northern Ontario and connects communities throughout the province and the country,” said George Pirie, Minister of Northern Economic Development and Growth. “Stronger enforcement and safer opportunities to pass will benefit northern communities and help keep goods moving,” said Dave Plourde, president of the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities. The province operates 35 truck inspection stations, including multiple locations that operate 24 hours a day. Work on the Hearst inspection station is expected to be complete in December.
