A candidate for a city council seat in Ward 12 in Greater Sudbury has died. Colin McKerral passed away Sept. 28 at the age of 51. “He loved spending his days fishing and being out on his boat, enjoying the outdoors and making memories on the water,” McKerral’s obituary said. The City of Greater Sudbury confirmed his passing in a news release Oct. 5. “We extend our sincere condolences to Mr. McKerral’s family, friends and all those who knew him,” the release said. Voters will be notified “As the deadline for candidates to withdraw from the 2026 municipal election has passed and ballots have already been prepared, Mr. McKerral’s name will remain on the Ward 12 ballot. Throughout the voting process, electors will see notices and signage advising of Mr. McKerral’s passing.” Under the Municipal Act, if a candidate dies before election day, “the election shall proceed as if the candidate had not been nominated.” The result would only be affected if “another candidate would be elected by acclamation as a result of the death or ineligibility, the election is void and a byelection shall be held to fill the office.” However, that can’t happen since there are still four other candidates running for office in Ward 12. Election day is Oct. 26. A celebration of life will be held for McKerral Oct. 11 at the Cooperative Funeral Home on Lasalle Boulevard from 1-4 p.m. “Family and friends are welcome to come together to share memories, stories, and celebrate his life,” the obit said. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Lung Health Foundation would be greatly appreciated.
