Caution urged as wildlife risks rise on and around Manitoulin roads

Manitoulin police warn residents about active wildlife this summer

The UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service is reminding residents and visitors on Manitoulin Island to exercise caution as local wildlife becomes more active during the summer season.

In a social media post Monday, police noted that deer, bears and other animals are frequently seen on roads and trails across the area.

“Slow down, stay alert and never feed wild animals,” police said – emphasizing the importance of respecting wildlife while sharing the island’s natural spaces.

Police stress safety for all

An accompanying social media video reinforced the message, highlighting specific risks during times of peak wildlife activity.

“Manitoulin’s wildlife is beautiful, but it’s best to be admired from a distance,” said police. “Watch for deer, especially at dawn and dusk. Feeding animals puts them and you at risk.”

The safety reminder comes as many species become more visible during their foraging patterns this time of year.

The post echoes concerns by Ontario Provincial Police earlier this year about wildlife on or near northern Ontario roads.

UCCM police specifically warned against the dangers of human-wildlife interactions, noting that feeding wild animals creates hazards for both people and animals.

Safety a shared responsibility

Authorities emphasized that maintaining safe conditions requires cooperation from all community members.

The police service’s campaign aims to reduce wildlife collisions and negative encounters as summer tourism peaks on the island, with authorities urging motorists to reduce speeds in areas with frequent animal crossings and remain particularly vigilant during twilight hours when visibility decreases and animal activity increases.

“Be sure to be alert on the roads and respect their space,” police said in their video message. “Let’s keep Manitoulin safe for everybody – two-legged and four-legged alike.”
