Greater Sudbury says a major milestone in the construction of a new downtown arena has been achieved: all 532 micropiles have been installed at the construction site, with 501 of those being grouted. The micropiles are holes drilled into the ground for a major construction project. A steel bar or pipe is inserted into the hole, which is then filled with cement grout under pressure. The micropiles help support the weight of a building that is constructed, for example, on poor or unstable soil, ensuring the structural integrity of the project. In an update on social media, the city said a total of 24,500 metres have been drilled for the micropiles – “that’s like travelling from downtown Sudbury to Hanmer!” the post said. “800 square metres of grout placed (that’s roughly the volume of a two-storey house!” In addition, it said that 193 metres of storm sewer upgrades have been completed. “Next up, we’re laying the foundation that will support countless sporting events, concerts, and community gatherings for years to come,” the post said. The roughly $200 million events centre is slated to open in the fall of 2028.
