The Town of Kirkland Lake has restored water service after a series of watermain breaks left residents and businesses without reliable access for nearly a week. The fourth and final break, discovered Friday on Chateau Drive, was repaired by Saturday morning, marking what officials hope is the end of a disruptive stretch that tested the community’s patience and highlighted aging infrastructure. A week of escalating repairs The crisis began Sunday, June 22, with a break on Al-Wende Avenue, prompting a temporary road closure and precautionary boil water advisory for residents along Government Road West. By Monday, crews had located the damaged pipe but encountered complications due to buried utilities, delaying repairs. The situation worsened Tuesday when a second break was discovered near the College and Federal areas, further straining resources. By Thursday, a third rupture struck Blomfield Road, followed by Friday’s fourth break on Chateau Drive – leaving entire neighborhoods without water and Al-Wende Avenue closed for restoration work. Mayor Stacy Wight acknowledged the strain on the community, speaking with CTV News on Friday evening: “The town of Kirkland Lake has known our infrastructure would be an issue moving forward for many, many years. The roadblock to that, of course, is finances,” she said. “This year, in this year’s budget, we have okayed a re-aligning program for a few of our sections of infrastructure, so we are really hoping that this is a more economical way to get our infrastructure repairs underway in a quicker fashion.” The boil water advisory, initially affecting Government Road West from the Lasalle Theatre to Chateau Drive, was lifted Thursday afternoon after testing confirmed water safety. Emergency support for residents With water service disrupted, the town mobilized emergency resources. Affected residents could collect bottled water at the Fire Station on O’Meara Drive, with a limit of one case per household. Showers and restrooms were made available at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex on Allen Avenue, operating until 11 p.m. Friday and reopening as needed on Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Officials indicated that proof of address would be required at both locations to access the services. Ongoing restoration work While water service has been fully restored, crews remain on Al-Wende Avenue to complete road repairs and streetlight reinstallations, expected to continue into next week. The temporary roadway closure persists to ensure worker safety. Town officials thanked residents for their patience throughout the ordeal, stressing that updates would continue to be provided via official social media channels.
