Job cuts coming to northern French school board, says Cupe

French language school board to cut five secretarial positions Aug 30/26

Staffing changes at the Conseil Scolaire Public du Nord-Est de l’Ontario board to come into effect by Sept.

CUPE 4865 and the Ontario School Board Council of Unions which represent the board workers, says the changes will impact school services and increase pressure on education workers, while reducing critical support available to students, staff, and families across the board, the union said in a news release July 3

“The Board recently notified the local that it plans to eliminate five secondary school secretary positions, by converting existing 12-month positions into 10-month positions effective Aug. 30. The local has also been advised that an additional two educational assistant positions may be eliminated,” the union said.

215 education workers are represented by CUPE 4865.

“Instead of investing in the frontline workers who support students every day, the board is reducing services and placing even more pressure on our schools,” said CUPE 4865 President Mitch Gagnon.

The Board has recently hired a new supervisor and a maintenance administrator, increasing the number of administrators from two to five.

The OSBCU said these cuts reflect a broader pattern driven by chronic underfunding of education in Ontario since 2018.
