Greater Sudbury announces new locations for speed cameras effective Oct. 10

Sudbury Mayor Paul Lefebvre says while speed cameras are effective in slowing drivers down, he’s willing to work with the province on other measures.

Greater Sudbury has announced the new locations for its six speed cameras, which will be in effect Oct. 10.

While Ontario Premier Doug Ford has moved to ban the cameras, calling them a tax grab, a news release from the city said the cameras are effective in slowing traffic.

“Data collected from May to August 2025 indicates speed cameras significantly reduce both the percentage of vehicles speeding and their operating speeds,” the release said.

For example, it said on MR 80 in Hanmer, average speeds prior to the cameras being installed were 89 km/h in a 60 km/h zone.

But with the cameras in place, that was reduced to 68 km/h.

Similar impacts were recorded at the five other locations, the city said.

Speaking Tuesday evening, Mayor Paul Lefebvre said he’s hoping the province will at least allow the cameras to remain in school zones.

“There’s a lot of discussions that are on right now to maybe that the school zones are kept with some speed cameras to make sure that everything’s ... kept safe. So we’ll see what comes out with the legislation,” Lefebvre said.

“I’ve always said that we work with the government to see what ... they come up with, and we will work with them to make sure that we keep our streets safe.”

The province has said it will provide funding for alternative ways to slow traffic. But the mayor said the speed cameras are already effective.

“We’re seeing a very drastic decrease (in speeding) right there,” Lefebvre said.

“But that being said ... if the province wants to take it that direction, they feel that there are better ways for road safety, (we’ll) work together to achieve that.”

Speeding tickets

“When the cameras are active, motorists photographed (driving past the speed limit) will get a ticket,” the release said.

“Like speeding tickets issued by police officers, the fine amount will be based on how much the driver was exceeding the posted speed limit. Tickets are mailed to the vehicle’s registered plate owner within 30 days. No demerit points will be issued by the Ministry of Transportation and no one’s driving record will be impacted.”

The new speed camera locations, effective Oct. 10, are:

Main Street, Val Caron (between Trudeau Street and Anton Avenue)

Bancroft Drive (between Kingsway and Belleview Avenue)

Algonquin Road (between Regent Street and Trailridge Drive)

Municipal Road 80, McCrea Heights (between Donaldson Crescent and Fleming Street)

Garson Coniston Road (between Maki Street and Falconbridge Road)

Howey Drive (between Downing and Somerset Streets)
