Four people from Kirkland Lake charged in theft of $30K in copper wire

Two men and two women from Kirkland Lake have been charged in connection with the theft of $30,000 in copper wire that took place last summer in the community.

The investigation began Aug. 17 when Ontario Provincial Police received a report of abandoned copper wire and a suspicious vehicle in the area of Chaput Hughes.

“Through a combination of witness statements, police observations, and the execution of three search warrants, officers recovered a significant quantity of industrial-grade copper wire, along with casings and tools commonly used for stealing and stripping copper,” police said in a news release Wednesday.

A 48-year-old man and a 47-year-old woman have been charged with theft over $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

In addition, a 34-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman have been charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. The woman is also charged with a probation violation.

All four suspects are scheduled to appear in the Kirkland Lake Ontario Court of Justice on Nov. 27.
