Sault Ste. Marie MPP Chris Scott has issued his first statement since he was charged with two assault-related offences last week. Scott has since been kicked out of the Progressive Conservative caucus and has faced calls to resign from Ontario’s New Democrats, among others. In his statement Thursday, he said he wanted to “address the community directly following recent allegations and questions surrounding my office.” Scott said he has retained a lawyer and that he trusts the “criminal justice system.” Asking for privacy “While the case is before the court, it is inappropriate to comment further about the charges,” the statement said. “Out of respect for everyone involved – especially my children – I ask that my family’s privacy be respected through this process.” Scott was arrested Sept. 21 and charged with assault and assault with a weapon. He was arrested by police in Toronto after an investigation by police in Sault Ste. Marie. The first-term MPP was elected in February by a margin of just more than 100 votes. In his statement Thursday, Scott said representing the riding “is one of the greatest honours and privileges of my life.” “I am taking a short leave from partisan and non-essential public appearances but remain fully committed to serving the people of Sault Ste. Marie as I was elected to do,” he said. “Constituency services will continue without interruption, and my work as your MPP continues. My office remains open to help residents with casework, government programs and everyday issues," Scott added. “Thank you to the many constituents and community leaders who have reached out. Your support means a great deal to me and my team.”
