Authorities warn drivers to watch for moose on northern Ontario highways

Ontario Provincial Police are urging motorists to use extra caution when driving on northern highways due to increased moose activity.

“The moose are out on northern Ontario highways,” OPP said in a social media post.

“Motorists should take extra precaution when traveling – especially at night. Their dark coats are difficult to see.”

Moose collisions pose significant risks due to the animals’ size and height, often causing severe vehicle damage and injuries.

Safety tips

Authorities offered the following safety tips:

• Stay alert and avoid distractions.
• Scan ditches and shoulders.
• Reduce speed.
• Ensure windshields, wipers, and headlights are clean and functioning properly.
• Be prepared to stop, even if a moose appears far away.
• Avoid honking or flashing lights to scare the animal.

If encountering a moose, OPP advised, drivers should activate hazard lights to warn others and wait patiently for the animal to cross.

“Drive safe,” said acting OPP Sgt. Michelle Simard.

The Ministry of Natural Resources in previous years has advised extra vigilance during dawn, dusk, and nighttime hours or when visibility is low.
