HALIFAX - Nova Scotia Premier Darrell Dexter is condemning a cross-burning incident in the province, saying there's no room for intolerance or racism.

"When events like this happen you can only be deeply saddened by them," Dexter said Thursday outside a cabinet meeting.

In defending the province's reputation, he said issues of racism and intolerance were not peculiar to Nova Scotia.

"They happen, unfortunately, in communities across the country and when they do, we come together around those who have been injured and we look to support them."

RCMP say a cross was set alight at the home of an interracial couple in Newport.

Two brothers who police say are known to the couple have been charged with public incitement of hatred, mischief and uttering threats.

Shayne Howe, who is black, and Michelle Lyon, who is white, say they awoke early Sunday to find a cross burning on the front lawn of their home.

A bail hearing for Nathan Rehberg, 20, and Justin Rehberg, 19, both of Avondale, is scheduled to resume on Monday.
