WINDSOR, N.S. - Two Nova Scotia brothers charged with hate crimes after a cross was burned in the yard of an interracial couple have been granted bail.

Nathan Rehberg, 20, and Justin Rehberg, 19, were released today with conditions after a brief appearance in provincial court.

They must abstain from alcohol and drug use, cannot possess weapons, can have no contact with the victims and must keep at least 500 metres away from the Poplar Grove, N.S., home of Shayne Howe and Michelle Lyon.

They must also stay with their grandparents and observe an overnight curfew.

Both are due back in court March 9 for election and plea on charges of public incitement of hatred, mischief, uttering threats and criminal harassment.

Police allege the accused hurled racial slurs at the couple, who have five children, more than a week ago.
