MONCTON, N.B. - New Brunswick Premier Shawn Graham says, if re-elected, his Liberal government would freeze property assessments for two years, while a permanent fix for property taxes is found.

Graham made the campaign promise today in Moncton.

He says property taxes are increasing faster than some people are able to afford.

Graham says while his government has introduced measures to help seniors and people on low-incomes, a public engagement process is needed to find the best approach to property taxes and assessments.

Mayors from across the province met with Graham this week to discuss property taxes and funding for municipalities and are to meet with Conservative Leader David Alward soon.

The Conservatives have pledged to cap property tax increases at three per cent while a better solution is sought.
