Burst pump causes water accumulation in Lafontaine Tunnel

There was an accumulation of water inside the northbound Louis-Hippolyte Lafontaine Bridge–Tunnel.

There was an unusual accumulation of water inside the northbound Louis-Hippolyte Lafontaine Bridge–Tunnel, from the South Shore to Montreal, on Wednesday morning.

“There was no closure. Vehicles could circulate in the tunnel,” said Sarah Bensadoun, a spokesperson with Quebec’s Transport Ministry (MTQ), noting that there were some slowdowns. “There was no security danger.”

She explained that the situation was caused by a breakage in a pump, which forced water into the tunnel.

The MTQ could not confirm how much water had spilled inside the tunnel.

Bensadoun noted that the rupture has already been repaired.
