With the month-long strike by 2,400 STM maintenance workers set to end next weekend, no date has been set for the resumption of negotiations. However, on Monday, the Montreal public transit authority stated that its negotiating team was available to negotiate “even during the holiday season.” There have been no fewer than 120 meetings, six months of mediation and 45 days of conciliation, according to the transit company. The strike takes the form of a refusal to work overtime. It began on Dec. 11 and will end on Jan. 11 at 11:59 p.m. As of Jan. 5, the STM stated that 1,320 vehicles were required to provide service and that there was a shortage of approximately 100 buses to provide full service. This is the fourth strike by this union, which is affiliated with the CSN. Its members went on strike for the first time in June, a second time in September-October, and a third time in November. In the meantime, the STM reached agreements with three other major unions: the largest, representing 4,500 bus drivers and metro operators, followed by the 1,300 administrative and technical employees, and more recently, the 800 professionals, all affiliated with the FTQ.
