Quebec’s Leylah Annie Fernandez triumphed at the Singapore tournament, claiming her sixth career WTA title on Sunday. Fernandez (No. 31) dominated the second set, defeating Australia’s Talia Gibson (No. 63) 7-5, 6-0 in Asia. “I want to congratulate Talia and her team,” Fernandez said during the ceremony, according to the official WTA website. “You’ve done an incredible job. You’re an extraordinary player and an even better person, so congratulations! I’m sure you’ll play in many more finals, and I hope you’ll win a few more titles as well.” “You play exceptionally well, so keep it up. You’re doing a great job,” she added. The two players exchanged two breaks early in the match, and Gibson took a 5-4 lead with serve. Fernandez, who was playing in her first final of the season, went on to win the next nine games to claim this WTA 500 tournament. The Quebec native converted six break points out of 12 opportunities, winning 54 per cent of the points when returning serve. She also performed well on serve, winning 67 per cent of the rallies when her first serve was in play. Of Fernandez’s six career titles, three have been won in Asia, including her most recent one at the Japan Open last October. “I want to thank all the Singaporean and Filipino fans who came out to watch,” said Fernandez. “Not just my matches, but everyone’s matches. You made this week extremely special with all your encouragement, energy, and positivity that you brought to each and every match. It really meant a lot. Thank you for coming out to watch women’s tennis.” This report by The Canadian Press was first published in French on Sept. 27, 2026.
