Quebec warns against eating these cheeses over possible bacterial contamination

Quebec’s food safety agency is warning the public not to eat certain cheeses made and sold by Fromagerie Des Grondines because they may contain Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.

The warning, issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPAQ) Thursday, covers two products from the cheesemaker, located at 274, 2e Rang Est in Deschambault-Grondines:

• “Grondines” — all formats — units sold at the cheese shop between July 8 and 15, 2026, and units sold elsewhere under lot 1003.
• “Lachevrotière” — all formats — units sold at the cheese shop only, between July 4 and 9, 2026.

The affected products were sold refrigerated at a number of establishments across Quebec. The cheesemaker is recalling the products and has agreed to issue the warning as a precaution. No illnesses linked to the cheeses have been reported so far.

MAPAQ says the cheeses should not be eaten even if they show no signs of spoilage or unusual odour, as consumption could still pose a health risk.

Staphylococcal food poisoning causes a sudden onset of nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, cramps and diarrhea. Symptoms usually appear 30 minutes to eight hours after eating contaminated food and typically clear up within 24 hours. Anyone experiencing symptoms after eating one of these products is advised to consult a health professional.
