Quebec’s Transport Ministry (MTQ) is urging drivers to pay attention on the long weekend with the increased presence of animals on the roads. “With the hunting season underway, animals are on the move more frequently, and the early onset of darkness reduces visibility for drivers,” the MTQ said. More than 7,200 road collisions involving large animals were recorded between 2021 and 2024, with around 90 per cent of them involving white-tailed deer, the ministry says. It adds that collisions with moose occur at the windshield and front of the roof of the car, which causes serious, sometimes fatal, crashes. Drivers are asked to adhere to the following habits to avoid increased numbers of white-tailed deer, moose, bears, caribou and other animals: The MTQ will install signage in high-risk areas in the coming weeks, some with flashing lights. Wildlife management measures will also be put up in several locations, and preventative vegetation clearing along roadsides will be carried out to improve visibility. “Despite these measures, vigilance is essential, as the risk remains very real!” the MTQ says.
