A Montreal-area man has been given a historic 25-year prison sentence after sexually assaulting several women he met on online dating apps and filming the abuse. A judge sentenced Samuel Moderie on Wednesday at the Montreal courthouse. As part of his sentence, he was placed on the sex offender registry for life and was labelled a long-term offender, which comes with a 10-year surveillance period after release. The 30-year-old man was arrested in 2023 and was charged with more than 40 offences after 13 victims were identified, many of whom met him on the dating app Tinder. Last fall, he pleaded guilty to 24 sex-related offences. Court of Quebec Justice Pierre Dupras said there were several aggravating factors in consideration for the prison sentence, including the number of victims, the duration of the offences, and the “disregard for the physical safety of victims and, in some cases, their children.” The 25-year sentence is what the Crown had asked for at a sentencing hearing in October. Moderie had asked for a shorter 15-year prison term.
