Early voting continues through Monday for the byelection in the federal riding of Chicoutimi–Le Fjord. Early voting polling places are open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. This election is necessary following the resignation of Conservative MP Richard Martel, who accepted a position as a senator. Martel represented this riding in the House of Commons since 2018. The Conservative Party of Canada is counting on Régis Gaudreault, a retired lawyer and former law professor at CEGEP de Chicoutimi, to hold onto the riding. Gaudreault faces, among others, the former president of the Quebec Dairy Farmers Association, Daniel Gobeil, who is running under the banner of the Liberal Party of Canada, and the Bloc Québécois candidate, Caroline Dubé, who has worked in community and political circles. For its part, the New Democratic Party is fielding Raphaël Émond, while the Green Party is running Nathe Perrone. The People’s Party is represented by François Sabourin. Byelections will be held in three federal ridings on August 31. In addition to the Chicoutimi-Le Fjord by-election, voters are headed to the polls in Beaches-East York, Ontario, as well as in the riding of North Vancouver-Capilano, British Columbia.
