Quebec’s police watchdog is investigating after a deadly collision on the South Shore of Montreal Wednesday evening. The collision happened at around 6:30 p.m. on Route 138 in Sainte-Martine, roughly 40 kilometres south of Montreal, in Quebec’s Montérégie region. The Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI) wrote in an email that it opened an investigation following an intervention by Quebec provincial police, adding that no Sûreté du Québec patrol cars were involved in the collision. The municipality said in a notice on its website Wednesday evening that Route 138 was closed in both directions until further notice between chemin de la Rivière-des-Fèves Nord and rue Major. The BEI said five investigators have been assigned to investigate the circumstances surrounding the police intervention. Montreal police’s collision reconstruction team is also providing assistance to the BEI. The watchdog said more details would be released on Thursday.
