Police say a man who jumped into an Ottawa river to evade police may be wanted in the death of a teen who was killed while trying to retrieve his cellphone.

London, Ont., police say they are looking into the possibility Muhab Sultany Sultan, a suspect in the death of Jeremy Cook, may have drowned in the Rideau River.

Sultan, 23, is wanted in the shooting death of 18-year-old Cook, who was killed earlier this month while trying to track down the cellphone he’d left in a taxi cab.

Last Friday, police said a Canada-wide arrest warrant had been issued for Sultan, who is from Calgary. He is wanted for second-degree murder.

Sultan is still considered at-large, but police say he may be the same individual who evaded police after allegedly trying to run down two officers on bicycles in Ottawa on Wednesday.

The incident happened around 4 p.m. One police officer was hurt, but the vehicle, which police said was carrying two people, fled the scene.

A chase ensued and the vehicle’s passenger was later arrested, but the driver was able to get away.

Hours later, officers receive reports of a suspicious male in a neighbourhood near the Rideau River.

Police officers descended on the area, but tracker dogs couldn’t find him immediately. Ottawa police say the man tried to swim across the Rideau River but went below the surface before authorities could reach him.

Police say search efforts have turned into a recovery operation as police say they believe the man drowned.
