EDMONTON - A man accused of taking nine people hostage in a downtown Edmonton office tower is making his first appearance in court this morning.

Patrick Charles Clayton has been charged with unlawful confinement and several weapons offences.

The 38-year-old was arrested Wednesday night after a 10-hour police standoff at the Worker's Compensation Board building that saw more than 700 people evacuated.

No one was injured.

Police Inspector Neil Dubord says the hostages remained calm while police worked through the issues with the gunman.

A negotiator talked to the armed man almost continuously and persuaded him to free the hostages and leave the building peacefully.
