LIMA, Peru - An 6.9-magnitude earthquake centred off Peru's central coast has rattled Peru's capital but there are no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The U.S. Geological Survey says it was centred 50 kilometres from Ica at a depth of 15 kilometres. The location is 299 kilometres southwest of Lima.

A police officer in Ica, Ruben Vargas, says people rushed out of their homes in panic but there didn't appear to be any damage.

He said that many people were still in the streets nearly a half hour after the 1:54 p.m. quake.
