In an effort to improve the patient and visitor experience, London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) has officially launched a new navigation app called MAZE Maps, designed to help people find their way around its complex hospital campuses. With three major sites, University Hospital, Victoria Hospital and the Children’s Hospital, spanning millions of square feet and comprising interconnected buildings developed over decades, LHSC can be a challenge to navigate, even for longtime staff. “We get repeated feedback from patients and families that it can be confusing to find your way around our hospitals,” says Andrew Mes, Chief Information Officer at LHSC. “Sometimes even our own staff can get turned around.” To address that challenge, LHSC evaluated existing technology and identified a solution that could make a significant difference. The result is MAZE Maps, a mobile-friendly wayfinding tool powered by real-time ‘blue dot’ GPS-like technology, similar to what users might be familiar with from apps like Google Maps. Visitors can access MAZE Maps by scanning a QR code posted at all hospital entrances or by downloading the app from the App Store. Once connected to LHSC’s free guest WiFi, the app provides real-time indoor navigation, showing users exactly where they are and how to get to their destination. “This is really about putting something in people’s hands that reduces stress and builds confidence,” says Mes. “We know some patients travel hours to get here. They often arrive early just to make sure they don’t get lost. This app gives them reassurance.” While the new tech is a major step forward, LHSC emphasizes that it’s not a replacement for the human element. “Our staff and volunteers are still here to support everyone who walks through our doors,” Mes adds. “But this is another tool, one that gives people more independence and peace of mind.” Since its launch, MAZE Maps has received strong praise from users who appreciate both its ease of use and its ability to take the guesswork out of navigating such a large medical campus. “This isn’t just about convenience, it’s about reducing anxiety and improving the overall experience for patients, families, and caregivers,” says Mes.
