International Marketplace closures sparks ‘food desert’ concerns

SoHo residents are concerned their neighbourhood is becoming a food desert after only grocery store closes. CTV London’s Lauren Stallone reports.

International Marketplace, located on Hamilton Road in London, Ont., shocked customers earlier this week with the announcement of its closure.

Residents described the market as the “go to spot” for fresh and affordable produce.

“We went to the market probably two or three times a week,” said Margaret Goodyear, a nearby resident.

Goodyear said she would buy all her fruits and vegetables from the store.

“Because it was so accessible, you could buy that stuff, consume it immediately, and not have waste,” said Goodyear.

On one of her weekly trips to the store, Goodyear learned her neighborhood gem was no more.

“I was like oh my god and I saw people pulling at the door, but it wouldn’t open,” said Goodyear.

Leila Gardonpanah, the owner of the plaza, said while she understands customers’ concerns, she believes this is what is best for the community.

“We are thinking the best way to help the community is to have a Dollarama as affordable grocery here,” said Gardonpanah.

She said customers will soon be able to pick up fresh bread and produce in the warehouse located across from the previous market location.

“We understand these are hard days for everyone,” said Gardonpanah.

“We are trying to help the community have good and affordable products.”

Experts explained this will likely cause a temporary “food desert” in the neighborhood.

“A food desert is generally thought of as an economically disadvantaged area that doesn’t have easy access to healthy and affordable food,” said Jason Gilliland, a professor at Western University.

Gilliland said individuals without access to a car are most vulnerable.

“If you have lots of money you can get a car and drive to a grocery store or you can order online,” said Gilliland.

“But those all come with a premium.”

Residents explained their community is rapidly growing and the need for affordable food is more important now than ever.

“I am hoping that with the influx of new buildings, we will see an affordable grocery store or vegetable market pop up in not too long,” said Gilliland.
