‘Get that designated driver and get home safely’: Festive RIDE programs on throughout region

Police services throughout the region have started running festive RIDE campaigns to combat impaired driving over the holidays. CTV’s Bryan Bicknell reports.

RIDE campaigns are ramping up across the region, as impaired driving shows no signs of slowing down.

“They will be out there enforcing, ensuring people are getting where they’re going safely,” said Derek Rogers, OPP West Region media relations coordinator.

Police services across the region, including both London police and OPP, have launched their Festive RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) campaigns.

In the OPP West Region, all 13 detachments are taking part. Rogers says drivers can expect a heightened OPP presence on roads and highways as officers conduct RIDE checks 24-7.

“If you’re impaired by either alcohol or drugs, you’re a danger to yourself, and you’re a danger to those that share the road with you. Really, it brings into play making some plans in advance. So, get that ride-share service, get that taxi, get that designated driver, and get home safely,” said Rogers.

According to OPP, so far in 2025, “12 people have lost their lives in impaired driving collisions in West Region, compared to 11 deaths over the same time in 2024. OPP West Region officers have laid 2,461 impaired driving charges to date in 2025, which is an 6 per cent increase from the 2,313 impaired driving charges laid over the same timeframe last year.”

Rogers says several factors may be contributing to the increase in impaired driving.

“You do have series of drivers that are new to driving, and that message needs to be relayed to them. You have your folks that have been charged with impaired driving in the past and continue to be. These are problems with substance abuse. I think a lot of people also think, ‘Well it won’t happen to me,’” said Rogers.

In the meantime, MADD Canada (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) launched its Project Red Ribbon earlier this month, which coincides with Festive RIDE. The red ribbon symbolizes a commitment to sober driving.

London and area MADD chapter representative Katrina Allott says easier access to drugs and alcohol could be a factor in increased impaired driving.

“I think just with the increase in the ability to get alcohol and other substances, easier now. I know with the rise of gas stations being able to carry alcohol, and dispensaries all over the city, just easier access means more,” said Allott.

Project Red Ribbon runs until Jan. 5, 2026, while the Festive RIDE campaign wraps up on New Years Day.
