In a landslide victory, capturing nearly 85 per cent of the vote, Trevor Bazinet has been elected mayor of the Town of Goderich. “Yeah, it is a dream come true. In my high school yearbook, the graduating question was future ambitions, and I wrote I wanted to become the Mayor of the Town of Goderich. So, yeah, you can’t write it any better, right?” said Bazinet. In front of a crowd of supporters at Steve and Mary’s on the Square in Goderich, Bazinet celebrated the beginning of what is technically his second term as Goderich’s mayor. While this is the first time he has been voted in by Goderich’s electorate, Bazinet has served as the town’s mayor since August 2023, following the death of then-mayor Myles Murdock. “I’m now elected as the Mayor. Before I was appointed. And, you know, you never want to become the Mayor the way that I became the Mayor, losing a dear mentor and friend of mine in Myles Murdock. But, you know, I can officially say that I have been elected as the Mayor of the Town of Goderich,” he said. Bazinet received 3,098 votes to runner-up Steve Buchanan’s 587 votes. “My mom’s no longer with me. And like I said to the people behind me here, it’s a very emotional moment for me, because my mom said several years ago that you would make a great Mayor one day, Trevor. And here I am now, the Mayor of the Town of Goderich, elected Mayor. So I’m very proud. And I think of her often. And I’m thinking of her right now as I talk to you about it,” said Bazinet. Randy Carroll was acclaimed deputy mayor of Goderich. Liz Petrie, Vanessa McMillan, John Thompson, Jacob Bjerg and Chris Garnier make up the rest of Goderich council. Garnier beat Charles Oliver by just two votes for the final council seat, according to the unofficial results released by the Town of Goderich.
