Single and hungry for love? An event being held at a Winnipeg grocery store may be just the ticket.

After attempting the traditional pickup spots, Winnipegger Lucas Andrich saw a new opportunity to take advantage of a real “meat market” and is organizing a singles event night at a local Safeway grocery store next month.

After all, what better place to find that perfect someone to suit your tastes than a local supermarket?

“Me and my friend were talking and he thought it would be a good idea if there were more singles at Safeway when we shopped,” Andrich, 30, told CTV Winnipeg. “So, I made the event and everyone else apparently likes the idea.”

Dubbed “Singles Night at Safeway,” the event is scheduled for 7 p.m. until closing time on March 3.

The idea has already taken off online, with nearly 1,000 people saying on Facebook that they'll attend.

Winnipeggers looking for love have been told to tie a bag on their grocery cart to identify themselves as single. And, there’s a charitable component: Bring a food item for a local food bank, then start searching for a new squeeze.

On the Facebook event page, many are hailing the idea. Others are, naturally, having some light-hearted fun with the quirky mixer.

“Excellent! Now I can combine my unwise romantic AND dietary choices!” wrote Ryan Palmquist.

Relationship expert Susan Wenzel says meeting people in person -- and in a non-threatening environment like the local supermarket -- makes a lot sense.

She says some of her clients have become disillusioned with online dating but this event creates a new opportunity to meet someone. Wenzel added, "It’s a very safe environment.”

And who knows? For those planning to check out singles night, there is always the possibility that an evening at the grocery store will lead to a very different trip down the aisle.
