TORONTO -- Calgary's Rupert Garcia was the runner-up in an international competition involving chefs under the age of 27.

The 24-year-old from the Calgary Golf and Country Club was second in the mystery-box contest behind gold medallist Peter Lex of Hamburg, Germany. Jhao-Rong Fu of Taiwan took the bronze medal.

There were contestants from 20 countries at the 2014 Jeunes Chefs Rotisseurs Competition in Durban, South Africa.

Competitors had four hours to compose a menu and prepare a three-course meal (an appetizer, main course and dessert) to serve four using ingredients revealed when the event commences.

Judges award marks for taste, presentation, originality and kitchen technique.

La Chaine des Rotisseurs is an international gastronomic society with members in more than 75 countries devoted to promoting fine dining. This event is a chance for chefs up to age 27 with fewer than five years professional experience to showcase their talents and creativity in an international arena.
