University of Guelph investigating “troubling event” involving racist and hateful symbols

The University of Guelph said they are investigating a troubling on-campus incident.

CTV News obtained a statement that was sent to staff and students following a pub night on Jan. 14.

“We write today to address a deeply troubling event that happened on campus that goes against our values and the standards we hold for our community,” the statement from the university said.

“During an event this week some students arrived wearing shirts marked with racist, antisemitic, anti-Black, homophobic and other hateful language and symbols.”

The statement went on to say hate will not be tolerated at the University of Guelph and a full investigation was underway.

In an email to CTV News on Tuesday, the university confirmed they were aware of the incident and had “acted immediately to terminate the event and address the issue.”

The statement did not specifically detail what the event was or what symbols were featured on the shirts.

“Anyone found to have violated University policies will be subject to action under the Student Rights and Responsibility Policy. Similar upcoming events have been cancelled,” the university’s email read.

They added school officials are speaking with student leaders and campus partners to reinforce the university’s expectations and strengthen education regarding equity, inclusion and respectful community conduct.

Multiple resources, including Student Wellness Counselling Services, LGBTQ2IA+ Advising and the Office of Diversity & Human Rights, are available to help anyone who was affected by the incident.

In November, the school launched a separate investigation after a student living in Johnston Hall found antisemitic graffiti on their door.

The school called it “a malicious act that violated the safety and respect every member of our residence community expects and deserves.”

Reports were filed with the Campus Security Office and Guelph Police Service during that incident.
