Guelph’s outgoing mayor has been very public about his love of thrift stores and garage sales, but his latest find may truly be one-of-a-kind. Cam Guthrie said he was at the Goodwill on Woodlawn Road when he saw a dartboard for sale. “It was up on the top shelf, so I grab it, I look at it, and I turn it around I thought I was looking into a mirror,” Guthrie said. “Who was this handsome fellow on a dartboard?” Guthrie said he felt a complex array of emotions when he saw his face emblazoned on the dartboard. “A few things came my way right away. First of all, I was very happy that it was not used. It’s still in the packaging. Secondly, someone spent money on this. So, you know, if people are looking to spend money on dart boards with politicians’ faces on it or things like that, I would encourage them to give that same amount of money to charities,” he said. Guthrie, who has served three terms as mayor, is not seeking re-election in the municipal election this fall. But he said finding humour is the best way to survive the world of politics. “I hope that that’s the type of legacy I’m leaving with people, that at least they knew where I stood. They know I like to have fun and make people laugh, but I also took the issues really seriously that I worked hard on.” Guthrie said he’s not sure where the board came from, and he’s not even 100 per cent certain it is him. “I think it’s me. People are pretty sure it’s me, and that’s how I got a hold of it. And I love it.” For now, it will stay in his office until the end of his term.
