Waterloo Region and surrounding area could see ‘torrential downpours’

Waterloo Region, and a large portion of southern Ontario, could get more than 50 mm of rain on Tuesday.

The region and the surrounding areas are under a yellow severe thunderstorm watch from Environment Canada. The weather office warns of the possibility for “torrential downpours”, wind gusts up to 110 km/h and ping pong ball-sized hail.

“Local rainfall amounts in excess of 50 mm may occur for areas that receive multiple thunderstorms. The greatest likelihood for damaging wind gusts is expected to be over southwestern Ontario,” the watch said.

Thunderstorms are expected to continue blowing through the area into the evening.
