Demolition of the Frederick Street bridge begins

The Frederick Street Bridge is now part of Waterloo Region’s past.

Crews tore down the structure Dec. 6 and Dec. 7 as part of the province’s plan to build and expand Highway 7.

“I know that there’s about 17,000 people that commute from Kitchener to Guelph, and Guelph to Kitchener, every day,” Coun. Stephanie Stretch told CTV News on Dec. 1. “We need to really open up that corridor.”

The Highway 7 expansion was first promised more than three decades ago. The Minister of Transportation finally gave the project the go-ahead in October, and work began at Frederick Street on Dec. 1.

The road is expected to remain fully closed between Ann Street and Edna Street until November 2026. There could also be long-term single lane closures in the Highway 7/85 southbound and northbound collector lanes during this time.
